'49 A electrical system

My '49 A serial # is 622982. I only have the operators manual for the number group previous to mine, which tractors had the three position light switch. My switch has just on and off. I'm trying to find out how this system charges, with just the two way switch... or do I have the wrong switch?
Also, regardless of what system I have, how can I get a reading to find if the generator is charging? My amp meter does not work at this time, or simply doesn't show a reading because the generator is not putting juice through the system. All wiring appears to be correct.
Thanks.

Here is the wiring diagram for SN 584,000 and up. 1949 A's (Starting SN 611921) did NOT use the manual Low/High Light Switch control, but instead a Voltage Regulator with the light switch ONLY operating the lights.

If you work my Troubleshooting Procedure it tells how to Polarize and to full field by grounding the Gennys FLD post to see if non charging is the fault of the Genny or the VR. Even if an ammeter is stuck/froze you can see if the genny is working by placing a voltmeter on the battery. Setting not running if alls well it will read around 12.6 volts. With tractor running the voltage should rise to 13 to near 14 volts if the genny is working subject to RPM and state of battery and genny condition.

Check out my Troubleshooting Procedure and post any questions
