850 governor help

New User
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and came here looking for information.
A brief history...
My husband traded work for a tractor, 5 plus years ago.
The tractor:
JD 850, 3t80j yanmar engine, serial # 007245CH.
The engine was disassembled, the previous owners thought they'd run it out of oil and it would cost too much to repair.
After 5 plus years of searching and going blind looking for parts, I'm the computer person, we have it nearly ready to run again.
The last thing he needed was the key to start it and a battery. We got both of those. He put the key in and turned it to see if it worked and blammo, it ruined the governor. AAGGHHH
SO we found the new governor and would like any information anyone can give us on correctly installing this jewel of the engine. All the manual says is it must be adjusted by a professional. Nothing on how to connect it or install it.

Thank you for any help
Conny

Welcome to YT. My knowledge is very limited on the JD tractors with Yanmar engines. Do you have a JD 850 technical manual? If not I suggest you acquire one.

We have the 850 shop manual but it doesn't tell you how to install. Just it needs to be professionally calibrated.

Conny, see if this helps - It's farther over in the manual in the fuel section.

Thank you, he has that in his manual and followed it when reinstalling the governor. Apparently he did something wrong in the installation as when he turned the key it bent the torque spring shaft (C).
This engine was in pieces, the governor was hanging by something so he did not she how it came apart.
We were hoping someone could help with installing correctly so we don't have to purchase another one.

Maybe best to let discretion get the better part of valor and take it into a JD dealer's shop and have that critical part of the work done by someone who's been there, done that?

There's a thought, well except for we have no way to get it to the nearest john deere mechanic 71 miles away. Do have a couple of old timer tractor collectors in the area, which my husband has been desperately trying to get ahold of for help. So far no luck there either.

They probably won't be familiar at all with that Yanmar governor and built-in injection pump system. Have access to a little trailer?
