Unstyled B in fire

Saw a US B for sale. Says it was a mostly complete
project, then was in a barn fire. Little if any
paint remaining but I don't know how much was there
to begin with. Tractor is on full steel. Can a
tractor like this run again or is it strickly parts?

I would think if you took it apart and replaced some bearings and gaskets, probably the radiator, there's no reason it couldn't run again.I wouldn't be afraid to work on it.

Worst problem would be the firemen. Red hot cast getting shot with gallons of cold water-- bad things tend to happen

In the 60s my home town lumber yard burned, with a Ford pickup inside. Word was that if the radiator had melted, the fire was too hot to make it worthwhile to repair the truck.

I fixed up a 720 ounce that had a gas tank fire. The radiator needed a core, the lead melted off the governor weights, and the carburetor float was in multiple pieces. This was just the gas tank and hood burning not a building fire. The farmer was using it to pick stone with. He told me he ran like hell for the truck and when he got half way there he looked back at the tractor and decided he didn't need to run any more.

Yes, you are probably making the right choice of PASSING on this project. To start with it is not a RARE project to begin with. Next, when its in a barn fire, you have to keep in mind that when things are red hot and burning, if its an old bank barn fire the timbers come falling down and usually on the tractor causing more damage.
the real question is how hot did it get.
most jd tractors I have parted out that have been in a fire usually ALL the tin is worped and scrap
the heat makes the metal softer like the throttle rods, seat channels and springs, bolts and shafts.
If its on steel wheels even just the weight of the tractor hot enough will distort the steel wheels and they become egg shaped. Up here in Canada you also have to factor in that when the firemen put out a fire chances are water goes down the exhaust and if it freezes in cold weather you got froze and broke water damage inside as well.
And last but not least just working on the tractors your hands end up BLACK and smelly
the oil is baked inside and the best thing to do when working on a complete burnt tractor is to sand blast and prime it on the outside, then tear it down and fix or part it out.
I have learned my lesson on thinking of making a profit on a burnt jd tractor, I would pass on it.

Rebuild for a profit? No. Rebuild to save another from death, YES! Some people give up way too easily on these machines. These things were built with such great quality of materials we'll never see again in anything made anymore. I would guess you will need the usual as with most rebuilds, radiator core, gaskets & seals. Yes, maybe even the weights inside the govenor. My question would be...How's the SN# tag? Still there? Anything else such as hood and gas tank are always items that 50% of the time need fixing or replacement anyway.

If you don't fix it, bring it to Texas, I'll do it!

Jason, the sn tag looks to be near perfect, but I have only seen pics. If the tag is OK it would seem that it did not get REAL hot. Maybe???
