Hello to all. I am replacing the pto pump seal in my late 1953 john deere 60. I have read several posts here and there about the installation of the seal and whether ot not to use two of them. I just installed one seal with the lip facing the pump. I can install another if i need to but was looking and it looks like another seal would block off the hole for the port that comes from where the gears are. I am running 140 weight oil in the transmission. Should i add another seal in the opposite direction as this one or do you guy think one will be ok. Also wondering id that port is blocked off by another seal will that hurt anything. Thanks for the help.

It all depends on whether or not the seal you installed was a double lip or not. If it was a single lip then yes, you'll need to install a second one. If I remember correctly the original double lipped seal subs to two single lip seals from Deere.

IIRC those take two seals with the lips facing opposite each other as you are trying to keep 2 fluids separated.

Yes and if the bushing and shaft are worn it won't make any difference....this is not a good set up...

Do not drive the seals in so far as to plug the drain hole .I would replace the bushing and the bearing which requires disassembly of the clutch. If transmission oil got in there the clutch disks will be shot .

Thanks for all the help. I replaced the bushing and bearing. Shaft looks to be in great shape. Got both seals installed correctly without blocking off the passageway. Now i can proceed to rebuild the clutch pack. Parts are on the way. Thanks again
