Power Steering leak

I have a 730D standard that has started leaking a small amount (table spoon)at the bottom of the pedestal. I am going to be using it alot 4 days this fall. Should I get it fixed now or keep a close eye on the fluid level? After I use it a lot, the 2 bolts that bolt the plate that attaches to the bottom of the pedestal become very lose. Should put some lock tight on the bolts?

It's a BIG job to fix that leak... EVERYTHING has to come off of/out of the pedestal to replace the offending "O" ring.

So if it's not leaking so bad it will take an unreasonable amount of PS oil to finish up and then get it fixed, that might be the way to go.

There's NO reason you can't use Loctite on those bolts... I'd get new Grade 8 bolts and high strength Loctite, clean the threads with brake cleaner and blow dry with compressed air, then Loctite 'em and tighten the snot out of 'em.

Dan has you covered !

I have yet to take one apart that did not need new O-rings on the main shaft. They get worn away flat on one side and hard. I'm betting yours is that way too. It will only get worse.

Dan in Ohio, I couldn't tell if you replaced the bushing on the quill or not . You cant see it but the bottom of it forms the grove for the o-ring and packing. I weld around and around so when it cools it will fall out . Make sure they are still available . there is the bushing (bronze ) on top and the metal bushing on the bottom. Now the wide front doesn't put any thrust side to side like a narrow front would .Many people don't know its there .

No I do not think I did. I got the rebuild kit that used to be available from John Deere and can not remember those bushings (AR30476R) but probably should have replaced them after almost 60 years of wear.

Thank you all very much, especially Dan. This is over my head except the 2 bolts. I will check with a repair guy and see if he will have enough time to fix it before show time.

Thanks, Frank
