70D govenor

Can anybody tell me what the correct idle speed is for a 70 diesel? Also is there any adjustment that can be made to make the govenor more active? As in not letting the rpm fall so much when load is applied before more fuel is injected. Any advise? Thanks...Luke

In case you're confused by it, the IDLE listing above is FAST idle which is speed control lever all the way forward, no load.

The slow Idle setting speed control lever all the way back against the stop I beleive is 725 though I'd need to look it up to make sure it isn't 700 or 750.

Yes there is a whole host of adjustments in that system from the pump rack to the lever in the dashboard. To work well they all need "tended" to in a specific order because they depend on each other! Not really complicated but there is definitely "a process" to follow that starts at the pump rack & works backwards to the speed control lever!

Thanks guys. I do have the factory service manuals i just wasent sure if there was one thing in particular, like worn out govenor weights or weak spring. And i have not verified actual rpm im just going off what the tach is saying, and the tach is an aftermarket replacement. Thanks again!!

I would take a good look at your governor weights. Our 720 diesel was acting like your describing. It was easy to kill at part throttle and just didnt seem to want to pull anywhere but wide open. This summer one day, I started it and it didnt want to idle below about 1000 rpm. Ended up having thrown a governor weight and the other wasnt far behind. A new set of weights and now she will jump off the ground barking before she will give up.

Yup! That's the figure. I was just reviewing those items in my 70 shop manual last week for a friend having speed issues with his 720. One o these days I'll tinker with scanning & posting pictures like that.

Thanks.
