I just bought a John Deere 318 with the motor partially removed. Owner said it had he thought it had a bad starter, because it would not turn over the motor. I took out the starter cleaned it up p, put 12 volts to it and it runs good. I have not put in back on.
I tried to turn the flywheel, it is seized up, will not move with a large channel lock on the flywheel nut. I took out the 2 spark plugs and it still will not move. The tractor had 1,040 hours.
What is my next move?? take off the oil pan and cylinder heads? Any idea's?
I paid $500 for the 318 and it came with the 54" front snow blade with the 2 hydraulic cylinders, so I know that the blade is at least worth that amount.

We had a few 318s seize up back when I worked for
a Deere dealer. Onan engines and some problem with
the crankshaft thrust bearings as I recall. Who
knows?

Onan is gone as far as small engines goes. Don't
know if you can still get parts for that engine or
not. Cummins took over what was left of Onan and
dropped a lot of small engine support.

Parts for these Onan's are hard to come by. If it
were mine, I'd get a replacement engine (small
engine warehouse for one) as the 318 is a good L&G
and a Briggs or Honda will make it great.
