4020 24volt

I have seen post after post where many are converting their 24Volt systems over to 12Volt.
I am curious why so many are changing over. My 4020 24 volt system has been good to me, can't say it won't fail tomorrow. One thing I did learn about the 24 volt system was the batteries, I was going through batteries every two years, having to replace them, starter problems because the batteries I was purchasing did not have the cranking amps to spin the engine over, resulting in hard cranking and starter failing. I spoke with several about the option of changing to 24 volt, then I spoke with one JD Mechanic and he told me to purchase two 650 cranking amp batteries and all my problems would go away. Guess what, they did, especially in cold weather starting. All I needed was something that would spin the motor. I have not had any problems and batteries are going on 5 years now. Just wanted to ask and put in my two cents.

Welcome to YT. All things equal a 12 volt system gives less problems than a 24 volt PLUS not very many people understand exactly how a 24 volt system operates and how to diagnose it when problems arise.

Does your tractor have the two field installed circuit breakers on the starter?

The first rule in a 24v system is don't cheap out and cut corners. The correct batteries and good conections are critical. Those clamp on battery cable ends have destroyed many 24v starters with low voltage.

My 4010 is 24v and to me there is no 12v system that is going to hold a candle to the cranking of a 24v. Provided you are up on how a 24v system works and keep it in good mechanical order, it will continue to serve you well.

Just as an FYI....my batteries last for years as I put the batteries on a 24v Battery Minder which keeps them charged and desulfated.
