70D Powr Trol Issue

Opposable

New User
New to this forum, hopefully someone can help. Here is what I have: model 70D from my late grandfather with a 45 loader and a 3-point hitch. The 45 loader is plumbed to the side of the Powr Trol, not to the back.

Just hooked up the 3-point a week ago and everything worked as expected except that I noticed a slight amount of down drift. I pulled the check valves and cleaned them, no scoring on the bearings, everything else looked clean.

When I reinstalled them, the fun began. When I put the lever in the raise position, both the 3 point and the blade raise simultaneously, or nearly. Once I release the lever (EDIT: once the lever is in the neutral position), the 3-point blade lowers (but not all the way) and the 45 loader raises by a similar amount. So somehow oil seems to be transferring from the rockshaft cylinder to the remote cylinders. However, once they equalize, there does not appear to be any downward drift.

If I disconnect the bucket (using Pioneer quick-connects from the side), the 3-point raises and lowers as expected with only a very minor amount of drift.

I have the SM-2011 service manual, owner's manual, part's manual, and the 70D service manual, but I am afraid I am just not that experienced at this, so any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT: If anyone has the colored pages of the SM-2011 they can send me, I would appreciate it. Mine is not color and so those pages are not all that useful.

The same situation exists on "Big John" our 55 Model 70 Diesel.

The hydraulic line to the remote cylinders on the tailgate of the KRONE 260 baler is plumbed to the side of the Powr-Trol.

When the Powr-Trol operating lever is pushed forward, both the right hand and left hand lift cranks raise.

After the lift cranks stop rising, then the remote cylinders on the baler tailgate raise the tailgate.

When the Powr-Trol operating lever is pushed backward, both the remote cylinders on the baler lower the tailgate.

The same situation exists on "15" our 53 Model 70 gas tractor and KRONE 125 baler.

The Pioneer quick disconnect is plumbed to the coupling.

The 3 point lift links and draft links have been removed from both these tractors because of this situation.

Hope this helps.

If I am understanding you correctly, mine worked like yours did before I cleaned the check valves. When the lever was in the raise position, the 3-point would raise and then the remote cylinders would raise. When the lever was in the lowered position, both would lower at the same time.

After I cleaned and reinserted the check valves, when the lever is in the raise position, both raise at the same time. However, when the lever is in neutral, the 3-point drops and the remote cylinders raise, like the oil is being displaced from the rockshaft cylinder to the remote cylinders.

It may have nothing to do with the check valves and it was just coincidental. I did to a search through the archives, but found nothing that described this symptom.

Watched your vid, I do love seeing the 70 still doing farm work!

The situation you describe is pretty typical of 70,60,50s tractors. The 20 series fixed this by having separate control over the cylinder and 3 point. The fix is to install a Baker Valve. I did this on my 60, this separates the function of the 3 point and cylinders and adds another lever.

It's not so much the raise/lower order that frustrates me, I can handle that. It's that after raising both, when the lever moves to neutral, the 3-point drops rapidly and that oil is transferred to the remote cylinders raising them further. It didn't do that before.

How are the side ports plumbed to the rest of the powr-trol? How would oil get from the rockshaft cylinder to the remote cylinders when the lever was in neutral?

I occasionally use my JD 70 on a 10 ft. disk with remote cylinder. When the disk is first lifted, the 3-pt arms come up and then the remote. When lowering the disk, the disk lowers first and the 3-pt usually stays up. When in the neutral position, both the remote cylinder and the arms hold in their current position like you said yours did before you cleaned the check valve. So I would say something must have happened when you cleaned the check valve. Al

Hmmm, I will look in the manual again to see if I missed anything. Are there any gaskets or seals that are part of the check valve that I missed?

Update: I pulled everything on the rear end (valve assembly, PTO, rockshaft housing) and replaced every seal and gasket I could find. Unfortunately it still is showing the same symptoms as before.

To the best that I can tell, after I raise the implements and return the lever to neutral, the weight of the blade on the 3-point forces fluid out of the rockshaft cylinder and into the cylinders on the loader, raising the loader, while at the same time lowering the 3 point.

If I disconnect the loader, the 3-point raises with no issues and does not drift at all. If I take off the weight on the 3-point, then it works as expected (3 point raises first, then loader).

What am I missing? What prevents, or should prevent, fluid flow from out of the rockshaft cylinder into the remote cylinders?

I would say the blade is too heavy, but it worked fine before. Is it something I did to the throttle and/or metering valve?
