Antifreeze and Paint

I have a 1938 A that was repainted a couple years ago,(deere paint and hardener). After this years show season I noticed that the area around the radiator cap was starting to discolor and turn yellow, I assume from the antifreeze. The A has green antifreeze that I mixed, not sure what brand. I thought I would try some of this new yellow coolgard II antifreeze in my 1938 G, so before I put it in the tractor I dipped a bracket in some antifreeze and let it sit. So far the bracket has not discolored. Has any one else had trouble with antifreeze staining paint? Both tractors used the same Deere paint and hardener, so I suppose it comes down to different chemical compounds in the antifreeze, causing some to stain and others to not.

I've had JD paint turn blueish from contact with anti-freeze. I now use anti-freeze only in "working" tractors and seasonally put water in and drain it for the "summertime play" tractors. If there's a water pump, I put some water-pump lube with the water.

Had the same thing happen with Valspar paint and hardener. I think it's the antifreeze and not the paint. Not even sure what brand antifreeze I used. If you use a good wax it will help to protect the paint from discoloring. Still a bummer when this happens!,

Testing the antifreeze with a painted part is a good idea. I use hyguard and NAPA crossfire paint with hardener.

With that style cap with good gasket and hand knob is kept tight, how are you getting antifreeze on the paint in the first place ???

I think anti freeze stains are easier to see on Green pigment paint. Maybe some paint chemistry stains easier than others but I don't know of a common paint that you and I use that will stand up to anti freeze sitting on it. Might not show up right away but eventually the evidence will be there. Jim

I think Valspar is Deeres supplier on paint.
They have also bought out some popular brand spray can paints.
I think all permanent antifreeze will damage paint. Urethane paint might have more resistance to bleaching.

I would of thought that hardener in the paint was to help prevent that ? I have always had that problem with new tractors or repaint without hardener.
spill some battery acid on them that makes them turn color too.

My 37A was painted with JD paint with no hardener. I was riding on a bumpy road and hit some pot holes with the front tires and splashed some antifreeze out the cap. It discolored the paint where it ran down. I ended up repainting the radiator . I'm guessing the hot antifreeze done it. I have spilled new cold antifreeze on it and wiped it off and it didn't discolor it.
