Tire size input

I got a John Deere 1945 A with 9 bolt rear wheels. I am looking to get a matching used set of tires. Not going to pull tractor but plan to use it for light farm work - pulling wagons, raking, mite buy a two bottom plow down the road. I see a lot of 15x38s around here on A's&B's for pulling. I have mismatched 12x38 but was hoping to get a set of 13x38. I was wonder what any was has found to work good for them?

Thank you,
Jeff

I also have a 1945 model A with 13.6 x 38 rear tires (which are fine). In my opinion John Deere did not put large enough rear tires on their two - cylinder tractors when they left the factory and that caused the rear of the tractor to sit too low. Then, when plowing they would really squat. Just my opinion because I don't like any tractor that sits lower in the rear end.Ray

I always felt the same way Ray, I put 14.9 X 38 Firestone all traction field and roads on my 60 they set the tractor to a near level position, and in my opinion they look right they are about 2 inches taller than 13.6X38,,and of course they cost a bit more..

You stated sizes without decimal places.

Old size 10x38 are new size 11.2, I think
Old size 11x38 are new size 12.4
Old size 12x38 are new size 13.6
Old size 13x38 are new size 14.9

I would think 13.6 would look and work well.

Tim,

How many HP is an A?

I have 14.9 on my MH44 which is about 48HP now, they look and work good.

A's and 60's were in the 35-40 hp range in their stock form..3 plow tractors, the 14.9X38's work good on my 60 they bite well and set nice.

The rear tires on "Easy" our 46 Model A are 13.6x38.

Hope this helps.

Those tires seem to set kinda tall,,and there is some difference in the different brands too, and rim width can make a bit of difference also.

Walked down to the equipment shed to check the tire size just to be sure.

They are a matched pair of Safemark Multi-Angle 13.6x38 tires.

Yes, they do make it sit a little tall.

I just ordered a set of new take offs for my 65 Massey. 13.6 × 38 325.00 a piece plus freight from NTS 1-800-854-4554. I'm still waiting for them to get here. Akuret brand. They're supposed to have come from JD sprayers. They had a pile of them.

For a 45 model stick to a 12.4 of old size 11 and that is what it came with. Now if it was a pressed frame tractor then the 12 or 13.6 would be correct If it was a gas tractor and not an all fuel. Yours only came as an all fuel and 29 MAX PTO HP, you go up to the pressed steel frame gas and it is 38 MAX PTO HP. The gearing and with the all fuel engine you will not have much pulling power if you go to the bigger tires unless it has been converted to a gas engine. My 51 gas engine had the 13.6 and that was about correct for it, would not have wanted the 14.9 as would have lost too much power and would have had to shift down a gear. Tractors I had 38 A, 46 B, 49B, 50 AR, & 51 A.

13 would have became the 14.9 and that would be OK for a G converted to gas. I don't knoe if they ever made a 15 but the 15.9 is same diameter as a 13.6 only a couple of inches wider. 13.6 and 15.9 work good together for duals and would be OK for a pressed frame gas tractor, too big for yours.

Thank you for all your input.
I was just wondering how many of you have 13.6's on your A's. That is what I am hoping to find and think they would look good to go with my 4020 fenders I am going to mount on this tractor. I seen a set of 14.9's come up for sale and that my A would not have the power for them is what got be thinking. An A is a 3 bottom tractor- is that a 3-14 or 3-16? Reason being is I would like to buy a plow for it (probably a trip plow) and we have a lot of rocky clay soil.

thank you,
jeff
