2 cyl diesel hours

hi, just curious as to opinions on how many hours one could expect to get out of a 720 or 730 if maintained properly all their life?

I had a 730 with a starting engine many years ago that ran over 10,000 hours when I traded it in on a new 4630. Never touched the pony or big engine and was running fine when I sold it. Every fall it would be running a 500 bu Behlen grain dryer 24/7 for nearly the whole month of October often 3 or 4 hours completely unattended.

We still use 2 of them on the farm, one Pony
start & one electric start. The Pony start
tractor had a valve job in 1977 & re rung
the pony motor. @ that time the tractor had
10,755 hours.. In 2008 complete rebuild of the
pony engine, injectors, pumps, all the lines
replaced the head gasket & install new rings
& bearings on the crank. At that time it had
5208 hours on a replaced tach, original tach
was replaced when it was ready to turn to Zero's
the 2nd time.. Still use this Horse.. The
other one doesn't get used a whole lot, we bought
it recently ?? Last 10 years. It needs a
Over/haul.... Don't have a clue on actual hours
tach show's 7900 & some hours it's working tach
& it has to have alot more hours than that.

They still are fuel pinchers.

Thats pretty amazing. I have a 720 black dash pony with around 4000 hrs, a 720 black dash es with around 3000 hrs, and a 730 es with around 6000 hrs. Im pretty confident hours are accurate knowing who i bought them from. I farm about 80 acres with them, so my 200 hours of use each year split among the three should last me awhile. Thanks for the replies. Oh and the front weight god has been good to me, as I have three full three piece sets!

My tach stopped working in 1993, tractor is still going. Don't see many twentieth century tractors working around here any more. Seems like the 730 out lasted the rest and shows no signs of wanting to quit.

well u said it... properly maintained. don't have to be john deere either. any engine properly maintained will give long service life. caterpillar engines can go up to 30,000 40,000 hrs.no problem. just need clean air and clean oil.

I do not agree that any well maintained engine will last a long time. Much depends on good design and quality of materials. I remember many 4 cylinder engines that only had 3 main bearings. 2000 hours was often enough on those due to bearing and journal wear. There was something wrong with Land Rover diesels before 1980 - the bores used to wear very fast - probably due to the material used, again 2000 hours was plenty. Few of the John Deere and Perkins engines that came my way in the 70s and 80s did more than 3000 hours before they started burning oil. On some farms in South Africa where hours were logged, even with poor maintenance Model Gs and Lanz Bulldogs (semi diesel) did over 30,000 hours.
