Disk spacing

I would like to hear some thoughts on 7.5 inch vs 9 inch spacing on a disk. My Dad always likes the 7.5 inch spacing. Does that do a better job incorporating chemicals? Would the 9 inch pull easier? Which would be a better choice. This will be used on standing corn stalks, and possibly some bean stubble.

A 7.5 spaced disk is used to better stir the ground. The 9 in space is a cutting disk which will cut deeper and thus be harder to pull. The 9 in would do a better job of turning under corn stalks.

It all depends on how you intend to use it. A 9" spacing is more of a 1st pass rough cut disc. A 7" spacing won't cut as deep but will cut finer and make a better finish disk.

I had a 235 with the deep coned blades on 9" spacing that would really cut and man did it pull hard. But you better plan on going back over it later with a field cultivator or similar tool to chop it up and smooth it down because it did leave it rough.

I have a John Deere 630 disk with 7.5" spacing. I like it. The additional weight of the extra blades seems to make up for the smaller spacing. I use mine in stalks and it works fine. To me, the only downside will be when it comes to blade replacement time. More to buy. Mike
