John Deere M Engine Compatibility/Replacement

Hello, i was referred to this site by a friend who told me i may be able to find some here. My mother's old M (1949 i believe) suffered a crank bearing failure that caused some major damage. I may have to try and find a replacement engine. Can anyone tell me which other Deere models have an engine that would be a direct replacement for her tractor? Also, does anyone have any good tips on where to look for one or possibly a ballpark dollar figure for a running replacement? I appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks,

It would probably help if you put in your location
as the cost of shipping could be a deal breaker. I'm
sure a 40 engine will fit but not sure of what else.
I have an M engine that is locked up but probably
could be rebuilt.

A 40 engine is a direct bolt in. A 420/430 will fit, but you need the radiator to go with it as it has a water pump ( and a lot more HP) and the radiator is different.

Try Farmer Johns Parts. I believe he was a website and is in Georgia. He has a lot of M stuff on ebay. I want to say he had a least 1 running engine for sale at like $850.

Thanks for all your replies. I will get started looking and hopefully make this thing live again.

His name is John Weems at Taylorsville, Georgia and is a fine gentleman to deal with. 404-569-3093 Should have lots of parts to fix you up with.

I would like to caution you that these engines seem to have a high rate of the LH side(behind carb.) of the blocks being cracked and the front side of the cylinder heads. Mainly I think from being frozen. Pay EXTRA special attention in these areas when inspecting.

I have several complete M and 40 engines available as well as bare blocks and engine components. I'm located in S E Mo. so shipping could be an issue. Feel free to contact me by email or call 573 535 8952. Thanks , Tom Ziegler

There's one on ebay for 850.I'd probably look around and buy a running tractor and swap engines if you want to keep your family's tractor. You can buy good running ones in the 1500 range or less depends on condition.

Thank you for the responses. I am going to contact Farmer John and speak to him about his take-off engine.
