rope pull starting pony motor on R

Hello,
I saw an R at auction that had the pony motor and what appeared to be a black round nob with a cable attached to it on the dashboard that some guy told me you could pull, like a lawn mower to manually start the pony motor. Did all R's have this manual start option, even if the pony motor had a battery on it?

I can only state that my JD R built in 1950 (I purchased in 1976) had the ROPE START on the PONEY MOTOR...start rope was CABLE. It worked perfect!

ok, it was option, thanks guys. Also, how come I never see R's, 80's, 830's pulling bush hogs? Are they just not suited for pulling shredding mowers?

First of all they don't have three points, so that cuts out a few. They also take a lot of land to turn around, which makes things difficult on yards or small fields. You could use a larger pull type one in the field, but the PTO, particularly on the R isn't real robust.

yeah, I suppose the turning radius is likely why. I see tons of row crop tractors pulling shredders, probably because they can turn on a dime. We have a 6ft shredder that is too much for the Farmall H to handle, thought maybe an R could better handle it. It is a drag mower attached to the draw bar not a 3pt shredder.

Growing up in the 70's, I cut more acres with an 830 and a 6' TSC rotary cutter than I care to think of!

I still have the cutter, but, sadly, now the 830.

Well, I am crushed...

I thought that Rope start was to eliminate the pony and started the Big motor directly..!

Kinda figured it'd take MOOSE THOMPSON to start one that way..!!!

I always had hopes of finding a good Inertia Starter for a vintage WWII airplane and see if that would work..
