transmission

1945 John Deere model A... hand start.
This tractor has the high/low transmission. Is reverse supposed to work in high and low range? Right now reverse is not working in either range and forward gears only work on high range. I pulled the top transmission plate and all the gears and shifters look fine (no excessive wear). The shift lever looks fine too. When I first got the tractor 4 years ago gears worked.....nothing has been done to the transmission and tractor has been run less that one hour since that time. Did not run tractor because I was doing some minor restoration. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Maybe the hi-low lever is not into the slot of the shift fork ?
They are to only work in low range for reverse but with wear or removal of a pin IIRC ? they will work in high reverse even though low is like a high in other tractors ! LOL.

With the top cover off you can manually shift it into each gear and high and low and check to see if it engages and moves by jacking up one side and turning the belt pulley.

I suspect the hi-lo shifter is "between gears", unless someone has taken the cover off and not properly located the shift forks. Reverse should only function in low range. With some wear it's common for these tractors not to shift all the way into low range when shifting into reverse. A nudge on the hi-lo shift lever should fix it.

Mike, Does it make any difference which side is jacked up? I now think the problem is with the high/low shifter. Thanks for you help.

It should not as the differential will allow only one side or the other to turn freely. You can turn the tire and you should also be able to make the gears turn as you watch them. Also a good way to look for broken off gear teeth.

You should not be able to shift into reverse in high range, unless the pin that catches the range lever on the reverse shift fork has been cut off. We had one that we cut that pin off on to give us fast reverse for loader work. As far as being stuck between high and low range, there is a needle bearing on those years where the top transmission shaft goes into the main transmission input shaft. If it goes out, you will have a tough time shifting ranges.
