730 Broken Crankshaft

Im looking at a 730 Diesel electric start that the fly wheel broke off the crankshaft. Engine is and was free and don't know alot of history other than they were pull starting it when it broke. Any ideas of what caused this?

Most people don't know how to properly start or shut down a 2 cylinder deere diesel. Chances are they did not decompress and were not gentle with putting the clutch in either, that's alot of mass to get moving quickly. Plus who knows what it's been through over the years.

I bought a bunch of stuff off an electric start 720 that had this issue . It messed up other stuff so look close . The timing cover and governor were both broken . No idea on the cause but it pretty well wrecked the tractor with the pieces chipped out of the main case .

The neighbor years ago claimed that the primary cause of broken crankshafts in JD 2 cylinders was over-speeding the motor which means running at too high an engine RPM.

Running the tractor after the flywheel became loose is THE cause of this. Regular checking of flywheel bolts and careful listening will alleviate this problem. Mike

Oh, for gosh sakes, they are not that fragile!

And if they were, they would be PATHETIC rather than DEERE!
