D John Deere tapped exhaust?

I just bought a D, #141408, and it has a 1/2 inch tapped pipe into the top of the exhaust manifold, actually right below the manifold into the exhaust chamber of the head. Looks like it might have been capped, but why would anyone tap a pipe into the head? It is on the right side of the head. Ideas?

hum ??? I have seen intakes tapped before for use on a milking machine.

Maybe had a pipe contraption on to help warm the carb in cold weather?

I am guessing it is actually tapped into the water jacket, why I have no idea.
