I posted a little while ago about a motor from a power unit being used in our 1941 LA. I am not sure what year the power unit is or how to find out. All I know is the serial is G-017596. I haven't found other useful info on it. From the outside the motor appeared to be identical to the LA motor. I used the radiator from the power unit because the LA's original radiator is beat up a lot.
I had to use the flywheel from the LA's original motor because the flywheel from the power unit didn't have the teeth for the starter.
I got the clutch all put in and discovered that the tail housing would not go in. I figured the clutch wasn't centered but it was. Turns out the block casting is slightly different from the LA motor to this power unit block. Is it the same motor from an L?
I removed one of the studs and the tail housing went right on. So for now it has 4 bolts instead of 5. The fifth bolt hole doesn't line up. I modified a stud because the stud hole on the tail housing and the stud hole in the block are off by about .020". I figured some kind of stud in there is better than none.

That's where I'm at now. It seems to work good for now. I planned on eventually rebuilding the original motor but for now this will hopefully work. Its just going to be driven around, no heavy work,

Without serial number tags or unless you can find some casting #'s on the parts it is going to be hard to say what you truly have. If you get some casting #'s you can cross those between the L and LA parts books. It sounds as though you have some of both to me. Check and see if there is a casting # on the engine you are using as well as the clutch housing. I believe both are on the mag side of the tractor. Post back and I can look them up in the parts books for you.

The only marking I can find is a little tag below the dip stick that says 12/22/A. Pics to come.

la had a john deere engine. the l hand a Hercules engine. john deere engine had bell housing bilt on the motor. Hercules had the bellhousing on the trany. not many if any parts will interching. Bob

I know this is an LA. The motor sitting in it came from a power unit. The tail housing doesn't perfectly bolt up. Of the five bolts holding the tail housing on, only four line up. The fifth on the carb side near the bottom doesn't. What does 12/22/A mean?
