Tim S and others. Combine Power steering

Just got done with another harvest with my old 6620.The steering is getting kind of stiff when turning at the end of the field and it seems like you have to steer more than you should just to keep it going straight. kind of unnerving on the road. We'd like to coax a few more years out of the old girl. Where do we start?

Check the toe-in on rear axel. That will make them wander around. Then check the pressure on the power steering circuit. I would bet the pump is worn out .

Richard, have you changed the hydraulic filter recently? That can, obviously, have an effect on the power steering. As for the loose steering, my guess is you have the lighter duty rear axle (same as the 6600). They will get loose on the pivot pipe and cause what you are experiencing. A new pivot bushing will usually tighten them right up. If this isn't the case, it could possibly be a steering cylinder leaking, tie rod end loose, etc. Mike

It does have the light rear axle. One of the first things to do when I get it in the shop will be to jack it up and give it the "wiggle test".

Also be sure to check the tie rods of the stabilizer bar. We have lost a few of those going down the corn rows and you cannot keep it straight for nothing. Would hate to see what would happen on the road when the stabilizer dropped off one side or the other.

You can tap a gauge into one of the steer cylinder hoses at the rear to see what your pressure is. And the rear hings point is a weakness on those, I have had a few fail in the field,,and Ooh my I hope no one has one break on the road. I have seen stabilizer bars put on each side to take the wiggle-wobble out of them, as you go along they work back and forth all day long hammering the bushings out and weakening the pivot...there is way too much leverage working on the pivot.
