John Deere A ?

Just bought a couple of John Deere A tractors. One is a forty eight. The other is a late model styled but the serial tag is gone. Is there a way to find out the year? It has square axle housings. And a large radiator cap. Thanks for any help

Does it have a water pump? Both square and round holes in the cast iron wheel centers? Small hole in the top of the flywheel cover at the 11:00 position?

Based on provided info, it is '50 or later. Answers to questions below will tell whether '50 / '51 / or '52. I believe 4 round holes in cast centers makes it '51/52 and water pump would make it '52.

Retrofit water pumps were offered for all late styled A's. Don't go by water pump alone. A couple pictures would sure help.

If has a single lever for the transmission it should be a '50 or later. Can you see any original decals, 47 48 49 have John Deere centered on the hood and 50 51 52 are toward the front of the hood. Or pop off the clutch cover and 648000 (partway in to 1950) and later will have the added drive disk and one disk with double sided facings.

Also late 50 and up, CHOKE rod thru steering column and 3 holes in pressed steel at wear frame connects to trans casting Also unless changed BLACK face gauges from late 51 thru ,white face before but likely some may have been changed.Early 50 tractor had no holes in top of square axle meaning 4.

It has the square and round hole cast centers. Also has the eleven ocloclk hole in the flywheel cover.

The Water Pump add on can be identified by feeling the inside of the frame where the cross member has been removed and welded back in further back to make room for the pump and pulley. When doing so at the factory the front fan support was also changed. If you check the parts book the front frame changed at 700200 for the cross member change.
At 694825 the main bearings changed to the aluminum sleeve like the model 60.
The main case number changed toA 4000 R at 648000.
If you have a serial number card and a model A parts book you can narrow down the year of your tractor.

first 1000 in 1952 didnt have a water pump but i have seen water pumps put on all models threw the years
