60 crank seals

I'm working on another 60 that needs
crank seals replaced, bearings seem
to be fine,(so far) I have a good
long reach puller that I'm sure will
work to remove the pto drive
gear,I'm just not sure about getting
the gear pressed back on with the
crank still in the tractor.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Hi Kemper - I just went thru that on my 630. I spent more time worrying about the process than it took to actually do it. I used a puller and just a little torch heat to get the gear off. To put it back on, I got out the old propane fish fryer and an old cast iron pot. I had some well used peanut oil that I was going to throw out. I heated the gear up in the oil to about 300 degrees. I smeared a generous coating of grease on the new crankshaft seal to help protect it from the heat. You can carry the hot pot of oil right to the tractor, but don't spill it on yourself (of course). The gear slid right on, with a couple of light taps with a brass drift.

Everything that I mentioned above was suggested to me by the good folks on this JD forum. I don't want to mis-represent myself as a mechanic, ha.

Good luck with your project!

It's been a while since I have used the Deep Fryer idea, but they work very good, you have better control of the temperature, and it heats the item up evenly. I have always thought that too much torch heat took temper away from a part, or weaken it in the "hot spot" area...and when something is going on "very" tight, you can wreck it from beating on it...
