50 pto seal/bushing

I have 2 questions for the experts. 1. I have the back end off replacing axel seals; while in there I am replacing the front PTO seal. The bushing looks a little worn. How does the old one come out- chisel? And is putting the new one in a challenge? Or should I leave it alone?
2. Has anyone ever used roofing papper to make a gasket- like between the power trol and axel housing?
Thanks.

I only make my own GASKETS in an emergency and I use CONTACT CEMENT as per the instructions. I'm more interested in NO OIL leaks than ever getting it apart and saving the gasket. Possibly these pics. are of assistance

The bushing and the shaft wears in that area, then it cuts on the seal..so check your shaft for wear, it can be build up and turn to size,, all of the 2cyl.PTO seals were a bit of a problem in this area, letting trans oil into the PTO case..

If yours has a bushing. Early ones did not but I get another housing from a parts tractor with a bushing and replace them. The bushing will have to be knocked out or cut out with a punch with a U ground into the end these cut out bushing nicely. I press new bushings into place. Anytime I have one apart that far for something else I always at least do the seals and bushing if it looks worn.
I'd just buy the proper gasket and save any headaches.

I also would not use a chisel on the outer felt retainers like the JD book shows. No need to remove these first as they easily pop out when removing the axles and then they can be reused most times. Some of these are NLA I'd want new ones in my hand before I ruin them removing them. Also I set the axle end play before putting in the outer felts and retainers because these will make the axles move hard when installed.

1. Got retainers out easy wityh the axels.
2. Will get that bushing out and replace.
3. Have all those manuals, but they don't show much on that bushing.

Thanks to all.

I've used rooing paper when other gaskets weren't available, or I needed it right now. Have always used some RTV sealer on them. The roofing paper seems to work alright.

I have removed BUSHINGS when in a BLIND BORE., Filled bushing 75% full with grease. Insert size for size shaft into bushing and strike with ham mer....yes it works perfect......would only do this if housing around bushing was thick walled! Have removed bushings by machining a washer with an outside diameter greater than inside diameter of bushing. Flatten to opposing sides on washer. Inset washer into bushing bore. Thread a long piece of ALL THREAD rod into center of washer. Place weight on ALL THREAD and nut. Now you have a slide hammer. REMOVE BUSHING.
