630 Starter, Removing Drive Motor (Overrunning Clutch)

I need to replace the Drive Motor on my
starter and have pulled the nose cone,
armature, etc. and find that there is something
called a Pinion Stop (P/N R11116R (that is swagged onto the
armature shaft so I can't remove the Drive
motor. I can get the Pinion Stop from Deere but
don't know how to remove the old one? Would a
puller (assuming I can get it on) pull the
swagged Pinion Stop off or does it need to be
ground off carefully? There must be a modern
repair that is easier than having to swage on
the Pinion Stop.

Sounds like maybe you are talking about the snap ring and lock collar ?
Just today on another tractor someone posted a breakdown of this.
You just take an open end wrench and slide the collar back and then you can also use a wrench end to get the snap ring worked off the end of the shaft.

The "pinion stop" is hardened steel, and you couldn't swage it if you wanted to.

There is a snap ring (with a round cross-section) in a groove in the armature shaft, and the pinion stop snaps in place over it.

ASSUMING the last guy installed it correctly, using a hollow tool (tube) tap the pinion stop smartly TOWARDS the pinion, and it should pop of of the snapring.

Remove the snapring from the groove in the pinion shaft, then you can pull the pinion stop, followed by the pinion, off of the armature shaft.

Install in reverse order. It can be a little tricky getting the stop to snap in place back over the snapring.

I pinch to two towards each other with 2 pairs of pliers 'til it pops back on top of the snapring.

Thanks all!!

The Pinion stop popped right off after tapping it with a punch toward the Drive motor. I had the snap ring open ends up and tapped the Pinion stop there. It is all together now and ready to be put in.

I replaced the Drive motor back in 2008 also. Strange I couldn't remember how to remove the Pinion stop. I hope I'm not losing it.

Now the trick is to see if I can still lift it into place in the tractor. I remember being able to do it in 2008 but not with much muscle left.

The tractor starts much better now. I'm thinking the ORC must have been slipping for quite awhile before it started squeaking because it hasn't started so well for a couple years. The old ORC is bulged out the side.
FYI, the cable goes toward the rear of the tractor along the top of the starter. Anywhere else and it will get pinched.
