JD model B flywheel shaft end play

I have a JD model B that has too much end play on the flywheel/pto shaft. The flywheel is snugged up tight to the oil slinger, can the remainder of the end play be adjusted on the PTO side?

It is a 1936, serial #21774. The flywheel is by your left foot, and the PTO pulley is by your right foot. I am doing this research for a friend. The flywheel was loosened and shoved in towards the tractor while pressure was applied on the opposite end, the PTO/clutch side of the shaft. It was always my impression that sliding the flywheel in and out will adjust the amount of end play, but if the slinger is fixed to the shaft the flywheel can only be pushed in so far. I would think I should be able to tighten or loosen the nut on the PTO/clutch end of the shaft which would in turn affect the amount of end play.

Absolutely not! If you loosen that nut and run it you stand the chance of ruining the clutch driver and the crank shaft. You need to look at JD SM 2004 and it will tell you exactly how to accomplish what you're trying to do.

Jd SM-2004 starts at serial number 96000 and up. I am wondering if the older serial number tractor he's working on is the same. It would seem logical that it would be, but I couldnt know for sure.

I will check with my friend, the one that owns this B to see if he has this service manual,http://www.external_link.com/p-104-john-deere-b-service-manual-sm2004.aspx . I don't believe he does. We have tried loosening the flywheel then while putting pressure on the PTO end of the shaft and the flywheel we tightened the flywheel but still have too much end play. Once again it is the oil slinger that is limiting the flywheel from taking up the end play. I think this vintage of B is adjusted differently. Thank you all for your help!!!

Frank,

SM 2004 says to adjust the end play of the flywheel with the clutch engaged. Moving the clutch lever slightly WITHOUT disengaging it will give you movement at the flywheel to set the clearance. A dial indicator at the flywheel really helps.

The correct factory spec'd amount of end play, in case you don't have a gauge, is nearly imperceptible, visually.
