Starter rotation

rule of thumb has always been you stand behind the machine (tractor) to determine rotation of engine, so my grandad always said. I would expect that is the case with a starter as well. interesting to hear what other input you are going to get.

Starters for common applications are cataloged as "CW".

I am working on an IH "A", on which the starter enters from the BACK of the bellhousing, so it runs the opposite way, it's cataloged as "CCW".

In both cases, to agree with what the catalogs say, you have to view rotation from the DRIVE end.

Jim, I wasn't sure which end a couple of you guys were calling the "front" end. To some, that might mean the end facing the front of the vehicle, or it might mean the motor end, or someone might call the "nose cone" the front end.

Using the terms "drive end" (DE) or "commutator end" (CE) clears that up.
