4230 Syncro slow hyd update continued Questions.

Update on my 4230, shop told me the slow hydraulics was the front pump so I sent it in for testing and rebuild, shop called (place that does only JD pumps) and told me the pump had 2 bad check valves. Sent me another pump. Yep you guessed it same slow hydraulics.

So tonight we did a flow test from the trans pump. It puts out only 1-2 gal a min. Specs are 12 gal. So the books states to check the filter bypass valve etc on the side. All the springs and valves look good and move free, this is the 2nd time we checked them. So do I assume the pump is bad now? The best price on a trans pump for a syncro is $619.00. I am considering ordering a used filter relief valve housing just to rule that out. I can get a used one for $40 it looks like. Is there anything else that would cause trans pump flow to be only 1-2 gal a min?

I don't vote for the housing change,, but i do think your trans pump is bad,,I would change it now...weak pump, slow out put....no charge oil no front pump out put...

I normally go off the clutch pressure and PTO clutch pressure when I'm checking for clutch issues and slow flow..

119 lbs at all engine speed at cluch port. No change with front pump destroked. 3 lbs lube no change with front pump destroked or pto on or off.

I had the rear pump out, I compared my pump to the similar but incorrect pump for the quad range pump and the bushing shows some wear but not to the point of it hitting the case or wearing on the hex drive shaft. Im not sure that this could cause a 10 gal per min drop in oil delivery.

Is there any chance that one of the 3 valves in the filter relief valve is the problem. We did have that apart and all move free and there is no broken springs, but I have low pressure and lack of flow.

Also is there any way to check output of the pump before the filter relief to be sure its the pump?

It just doesnt make sense that it went from one day working to the next with close to no hydraulic flow. If was -20F when this happened.

It never gets above 119 not matter what I do.

So I know it is very low flow and low pressure also.

Is there anything else that could do this?

You've checked the filter relief valve springs. Have you pulled the spool out or made sure it's fully seated. I had a 4430 do something similar to me once. When I got it it needed brakes and would plug the screen and filter. At some point it must have plugged the filter so bad it opened to the sump and got stuck there. I couldn't get the spool out so I took a screw driver to push on it to make sure it was all the way in and it went in further, haven't had trouble since.

Tim s,
Is it possible it blew the gasket out on the filter relief housing and is bypassing in there?

Yes that is possible, and he could have a leak at the trans pump,,and I still don't know if the trans pump was changed..

We pulled the filter relief and changed gasket the springs all look good and the valves all slide good. Doesnt the filter relief just by pass the filter and go to the clutch/front pump when its to much resistance.

Havent changed trans pump, we pulled it and checked for wear and tried to put the bigger quad range pump in it. Syncro is different than the quad range pump so we compared wear. It has some bushing wear but the gears havent hit the case and the hex shaft has no wear as well.

Yes, it does by pass the filter, but at some point, I can't remember the pressure right now, it will bypass back to the sump.

I was just thinking,,once I had a pump shaft slipping on the crankshaft end, it only went into the crank drive just a bit...but that one quit turning completly,, i'm just sharing thoughts...i'm still wanting to condemn the pump...
