4010 steering

Posted earlier 4010 steering prob. Went clear through steering valve replacing ALL seals/o-rings, found no prob other than wrong size unloading valve ball. (Orig was 3/8" dia. book calls for 5/16") No expert but have successfully done about 10 over the years with this being first one not to work. I&T manual setting for press and ret valves is Return valves-.003, press, .001 which I've always used. My Deere manual says "upper left, .003, lower left.002, upper and lower right valves set at .001" which I assumed was a misprint. Upper left and lower right being return valves. Your thoughts? Thanks, john

I do them the same as 4020, some times you may need to close up the clearance a bit..this is where my test bench shines..you know before you go back in,,every now and then I will have to re-adjust one..Darn it.. I'm assuming that you had the tool on it and weighted the wheel to the right just a bit...

Thanks for reply, have the tool though home made (2- 3/4" machined blocks bolted to valve housing w/ .030 feeler gauge between them and operating collar, and a chain hung on steering wheel for weight. Poor people have poor ways. Soooo, your saying .003 for R valves and .001 for Press valves? email me at [email protected] as I might send the mf to you per earlier offer if I still can't fix and time allows, john

The returns are meant to open just a bit before the pressure valves, that is the reason for the .001 on returns and .003 on the pressure..

Agree, that's the way I set SCV's, and will try on this valve. I&T manual JD203 lists returns valves to be set @ .003, press valves @ .001 to"allow press valves to open slightly before return valves to ensure smooth steering" quoted from T&T manual. Deere manual SM2039 valve settings make no sense. Will remove from my green 9000#+ test stand and reset valves, john
