John Deere LA governor

My brother recently bought a 1946 John Deere LA. Seller said the governor was disconnected as it drove better that way in parades. As you might suspect further investigation after he got it home revealed a non functioning governor. Can you rebuild the governor and/or get a used or new one? I've checked this site and other aftermarket sources without success. Who would you suggest I contact for help. Thanks.

Why is it nonfunctioning. Not too much to go wrong with a governor if everything is free to move and the weights are on. It works using centrifugal force. When the engine slows down due to hard pulling, the governor opens the throttle. Simple.

I have been trying to get my LA going and recently found a governor issue myself. There is not much to them however it is an important part of the whole system working correctly. There is a fork inside the housing that works with the gear/weight set up and attaches to the outside control arms. I believe you could reverse the fork to be on the wrong side of the gear/weight set up and this would make the governor inoperable which I am hoping is the cause of my issue and an easy fix.

I second calling Rusty Acres Ranch for a used one. Also try Steve Ridenour - he has a website and is another great source for L parts & questions.

Thanks. I'll have my brother check this out as he has the governor apart. His tractor had an IH Cub carb on it and nothing running from the governor to the carb. He has a Jensales manual but it does not show the correct linkage. He is wondering if the throttle cable by the seat should go to the governor and then a linkage rod would go back from the governor to the carb. He has a new Zenith carb now installed that is correct for the 46 LA. If you have a picture of the carb and governor linkage would you email them so we have a starting point. If not we will contact Rusty Acres Ranch and talk to them. Thanks everyone for the help. He has some parades coming up that he would like to drive it in. Joe

The Jensales manual totally leaves out the linkage part. There is a rod for the throttle that goes under the drive shaft cover. At the end closest to the engine is where you bolt the start of your governor control rod cable. This then runs to the arm on the governor that points to the ground. There is then a throttle rod that runs from the governor to the throttle on the carb. There is a special bolt required to attach it to the throttle rod under the drive shaft cover as well as down by the governor itself. I attached a link to a question I asked about this a few weeks back that shows a picture of how mine is set up.

Thanks for your help and photo. That was exactly what he needed to complete the linkage and configuration. He is soon going to be parade ready and enjoying his "new" old 46 John Deere LA. As side, he is a big LA Dodgers baseball fan and has nicknamed his tractor "Dodger" even though he lives in Missouri and supports the KC Royals. Thanks again. Joe
