1949 John Deere Model M - Hydraulic Oil in Crankcase

Hello,

I have a 1949 John Deere Model M. Hydraulic Oil is leaking out and oil level in crankcase is rising, so I believe pump must be leaking into engine. Serial number is >= 32884, so looking at the parts book, I think I need:

AM586T Seal, oil, double

AM1149T Gasket set, touch-o-matic pump

I don't guess the gasket set includes the seal?

If anyone could confirm the parts needed and offer any advice about the job before I get started, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Just to make sure this is the single line pump. That is the earlier style pump on the M's which was replaced by the two line pump.

As long as it is the early style single line pump AM586T are the seals you need and the gasket is M506T.

When I rebuilt my MT's pump I could not buy the kit (AM1233T) from JD. I had to buy the individual parts. JDParts.com is showing AM1149T to be available now however so you may be able to get the kit.

Because the seal can fail I always run the same oil in my TOM unit as in the engine. I run straight 20 weight all year in both. My MT originally had the same problem you are describing and I filled the engine with some mix of oil from the previous owner. It did not cause damage to my knowledge but even after rebuilding the pump on my MT I like the peace of mind knowing if the seal fails again what is going into my engine will not harm it.

Does anyone know if the AM1149T Kit includes the AM586T Seal? It is 30 something bucks, kind of high for just gaskets, thought it might include the seal?
