Year of JD B

I just got a John Deere B given to me. There is a serial number tag but no serial number. I need a new exhaust pipe but I see there is 2 different ones available. The previous owner told me he thinks it'a '52. It's definitely later, preessed steel frame, battery box seat, etc. Any easy way to tell what year it is?

if it has steel frame and box seat mount it is at least a 1947 thru 1952 sq axel housing makes it very late 49 and up 4 round holes in case wheel centers 51 and up

Does it have a water pump? The last B's had steel serial tags and they are almost always imposible to read.

I can't help on the year, but look at where the exhaust pipe is bolted to the manifold. I don't remember which is which (gas vs. all-fuel), but one of them has that bolt-on flange at an angle and the other one is horizontal. Just get one like is on there now.

I acquired a late B quite a few years back. Know what you mean about the SN Tag. I tried a lot of things, carefully, not wanting to loose anything that was there. Cleaned with a solvent and still couldn't get. Was out there one night, and just for the heck of it, grabbed a flashlight and went out. Changing to different angles I managed to get it. Turned out to be B300505, making it an early 1952. Good Luck.

(quoted from post at 20:00:13 10/20/14) Yes, the choke goes through the pedestal. Thanks to everyone.
Choke going through the steering ped. started at 258520 which was an early 1950. So yours is a 50, 51 or 52. 1949ABG, are you sure yours is a 49?

48jd i have a49 B it is late 49 it has sq axel housing it came that way from the factory i have seen many more like it all late 49s it has been in the family from new
