Clutch problem on Late B

Clutch started slipping BAD today while spreading walnut hulls with my old JD spreader. Took off cover on pulley and one of the adjusting bolts was broken clean off. Is that a stud or a special bolt and who would have those? I need to get this old girl going quick! It has a job to do!

Special bolt and I'd get all three and nuts while at it. I'm sure JD has them but pretty much all the aftermarket JD parts suppliers have them . I'm sure this site has them . Punch on " tractor parts " over at left column/top of page.

I bit the bullet and got all three, Mostly because this clutch has been acting up since I bought it and the bolt that broke showed signs of an old crack. Since the one broke, I bet the others aren't far from it since everything was pulling from two bolts and I bet they are stressed. Boy are they high priced little buggers! Any trick to get that plate out without using a puller?

Well, Bob, it's way too involved to try writing a "book" on here. That first "adjustment plate" and one disc will come out after the nuts are all off but the main drive disc will need a puller and there is an index mark on it that needs to be noticed before removal as the clutch HAS to go on correctly or it will all be out of balance and shake. Worst part is, if your tires aren't out far enough to get the pulley off , then you have the fun of getting those wheels to break loose and slide out on axles. If it has the heavy cast center type wheels then it would probably be easier to take the center-to-rim clamps off and just cock the rim itself enough to get clearance for pulley to come off.I've never tried it but don't believe there is any way to get those op. bolts out without taking it all off. The pulley brake and assy all has to come out also . I , personally would not even attempt it without a service manual. You may find one on line or at least exploded views on line somewhere. You may find a "CD" version reasonable on e-bay also. Once you have it apart you may decide you need discs or more. They can get expensive. The service manual you need is SM 2004. It is the best with 422 pages. they sell it on here pt# JD-S-SM 2004 for $79.95. Wherever you may look for it , it will be SM-2004. Don't get an "IT" manual. Good luck, my e-mail is open also.

You will need a good 1/2" Steel Plate, to bridge the crankshaft end (leave the Bolt IN).
with 2 holes drilled, to register with the threaded holes in the Clutch-Driver.
Use Hard Bolts, tighten them up good and smack the plate over the crankshaft end hard with a 4 lb Hammer..
Take the clutch drum apart, remove it and replace the "T" Bolts. Replace the cotter pins, GREASE the clutch while it is off..!!!!!!!!!!!!
Assemble and go back to work..!
Replacing all the bolts is wise..the threads are probably about worn out on the other bolts anyway..

ABSLUTELY DO NOT apply heavy twisting force to those clutch bolts..!!!

You WILL break the Clutch-Drum..

Penetrating oil and ginder-loving care is your Friend, here..!!

Davenport Tractor parts , used to be Dearly Departed, just checked their site last nite. Same one I got several years ago,422 pages and excellent reprint of original JD dealer service man. It is loose pages so needs to be put in notebook w/rings.

Well, that was easy enough. Found out who ever had been in there before did NOT put the cotter keys in. One had back off almost all the way off. Kinda measured the tightest one and set the other 2 to that depth. Any thoughts? 3 new cotter keys are back in but i didn't have a chance to test it out. Hopefully this weekend
