Tell me about 4630s

I'm and dreaming/looking at upgrading to a 130-150 hp tractor. I spent a lot of hours on a 4430 when in high school. I see though that the price range for a 4630 is about 1/4 to 1/3 less (and 20 HP more) than a 4430 or 4440. Why is this?
What are the things to be aware of if I start looking for a 4630?
A local friend informed me that he was aware of cooling issues in 4630s and also that they might only come with 1,000 rpm PTO.
Thanks,

I have also been considering a 4630. From what I have seen here, 4630's are about even on price to a 4430 ($10000 to $16000. To me, the 1000 only PTO isn't much of an issue as I already have a 4430 cab and a 4430 open station. Really, the 4630 puts out too much hp for the greatest majority of 540 pto equipment. You may never have a problem as far as wrecking a gearbox or whatever, but you will be wasting fuel while running a 7 foot mower, hay baler, or a 60 foot auger...

The 4440 is a bit more expensive, but it's a lot more desireable. It doesn't have as heavy a rear end versus a 4630, but it has a 466 in it. It also has a 540/1000 PTO, and it's more maneuverable.

We bought one new in 76 it was our big tractor for 4 years, then it work along with it's new bigger Brother an 8630 for several years,, we worked it hard,, back then we did all the mole board plowing in the spring,,that old gal would go for a couple weeks and never cool down,,as far as fuel it got a lot done on the fuel it used,, we rolled the tach in her "twice",,and wore several seats out,,yes it was a good machine...

My 4430 (rated 125 hp) cranked 137 hp for over 11,000 hrs before I sold it. Burned a pint of oil every 100 hr oil change. First engine, PS transmission, original light rear end. 540/1000 rpm pto is an advantage, 4630 has only 1000 rpm. Heavy work like chopping haylage/corn silage, plowing with 5-18, would run about 5 gph. Lighter 3rd cutting haylage, about 3 1/2 gph.

The Nebraska tractor test tells you the true fuel economy. My neighbor has two old 15000 hour 4630's that have been through he!! and back and they're still running. They look rough but they still work. One is a quad range the other a power shift. Both have been turned up to somewhere in the 200 HP range. The power shift tractor got a new crankshaft and flywheel several years ago when it sheared off the flywheel bolts, something the power shift models would do if they were run at 200 HP. If you are looking at a powershift model and the seller is bragging about having turned it up this is something to consider.

What size is the shaft on that 1,000 PTO. He was also explaining to me that there are two shaft sizes and he thought the 4630 was the larger shaft size and wouldn't even match my 530 baler.

I really liked the 4430 that I was around but just can't afford them. They seem to hold their resale too well.

(quoted from post at 00:06:57 10/21/14) What size is the shaft on that 1,000 PTO.

There was a pto shaft change at SN 7000. This is the spec's for pto shaft > SN 7000. Earlier pto shaft spec's aren't listed.

I have two of them 76 and77 both quads, stay with these years they have the better seats.Very trouble free tractors.I solved the heating with one additional core row in the radiators and the update turbo_On one the flwywheel bolts did come loose.'split it and replaced the bolts .Not much went wrong consider their age.

I don't know much about the 4430s but I got an uncle that has one and had to be split one time because of an internal leak, but im having a center oil pump issue right now with mine and find time to work on it now and then for next couple weeks, but what do you all think about a 4840 with duals and new cab interior to get for 12,000 to use for a while till I get it back straight again?i never had a row crop tractor other than my 5010 and 6030 that I got stored, but in a 4840,big looking and stout, but is it worth it?

also if I have to I will pull out my old good looking 6030 and use it,because it can do almost as much as my 8630 does and just as well
