3020 circuit breaker clicking on and off

Ignition switch on my 3020 was left on for several weeks and battery was hammered. Replaced the battery today and the circuit breaker (AR47710) clicks on and off with the switch off. Is it a weak breaker or could something else have shorted out when the switch was left on? Tractor will start and runs fine. A new breaker is $70+. Would prefer not to be switching out parts if there is another issue that needs to be addressed first. Thanks! Steve

Are the both lights and ignition switch shut off when the breaker trips?

Does the charging system work... A prime suspect to cause tripping of the breaker with the key switch "off" would be the charging system... stuck cutout in the voltage reg, if still a generator system.

That MAY be what caused the battery to run down in the first place, as leaving the key switch on would not have caused the cutout to stick.

On the other hand, if it has an alternator, installed, installing the batteries backwards or charging them backwards will cause the breaker to trip and possibly fry diodes in the alternator.

Bob - The breaker clicks on and off with switch and lights off in a rhythmic manner. Has a generator and system appears to be charging. About 14.5 volts at 1000 rpm and lights are steady. Does that help narrow it down for you? Thanks Steve

12 Volt gasser or 24 Volt diesel?

If 12 Volt, disconnect "BATT" wire from the voltage regulator (with engine "off") and see if there's spark from a current flow there.

If that's not it, you'll have yo take the hood off and dash cover and side panels off and look for harness damage.

Who in their right mind is going to pay Deere over
$70 for a Klixon CDA circuit breaker the can be
bought elsewhere for $20? Check the amperage to
it. Either it is exceeding the rating or it is
not. Those breakers do wear out. They will only
trip X amount of time and reset before they are
junk.

Couple of places to buy.

Bob - 12 volt gas. Did get a get spark with the ignition off. Pulled the cover and it appears the points on the relay got hot. There was a small piece of "slag" that fused the contacts. Knocked it out and no more spark. Looks like time for a new regulator.

Typically I don't think just leaving a key on would do this, but I had a small battery maintainer connected to the battery. Probably kept enough voltage running to ruin the contacts. Thanks again for your help! Steve

On the other hand it's well known that if you start a generator system with a dead but very healthy battery they will draw enough overcurrent thru the charging circuits to regularly weld the cutout relay points. Once welded like this they are usually junk as they tend to stick shut again. Should have charged the battery first, then started it for longer life out of cutout relays. This advice used to be commonly known when generators were the rule, not so much these days.
