John Deere 1520

I purchased a 1969 JD 1520 last February, knowing that the clutch would need to be replaced soon. It has a two stage clutch, less reverser with a continuous PTO. I really haven’t used it since I bought it and I operated it only in low range. It has always made a whining sound and I figured it was the pilot bearing or the throw-out bearing was going bad. I just finished replacing the clutch, pilot and throw-out bearings (the pilot bearing was bad) and the fingers were adjusted to tolerance. The whining is still present, not all the time but when the clutch is being depressed the whining starts and when the clutch pedal is all the way depressed it stops. When you start easing up on the clutch pedal (the PTO part of the clutch) it starts whining and when the clutch is fully engaged it stops.
Any suggestions?

There's a Torrington bearing inside of the pto driveshaft for the transmission drive shaft to turn in. This may be your problem. The only time that bearing turns is when you push in the clutch far enough to stop the tractor, but the pto is still turning. The needle rollers may have come out of the cage.
