what oil to use

i bought a 41 jd A and i am wanting to change the
fluids in the ol girl after much research i cant
get a straight answer , so my questions are what
oil can i use in the motor will 15 40 work???
and what goes in the transmission is 90 weight ok
or do i have to go to the 140 ??????

15-40 is fine. Either 80-90 or 85-140 will be fine in the transmission. SAE 30 non-detergent if you can find it or 30 detergent for the hydraulics if it has them. If the steering gear leaks, as most do, use cornpicker head grease in it.

If you are changing the oil for the first time, check to be sure all of the parts in the oil filter cap are in place. Frequently the plate and spring get lost, and then the filter does nothing.

We use 15W-40 in the crankcase of all our "classic" tractors.

We us 85W-140 in the transmission of all our "classic" tractors.

Hope this helps.
