48 A Roll-o-matic rivets loose.

I've been trying to tighten up the steering on my A and I just found that the rivets are loose that holds the ROM to the steering shaft. Has anyone ever had this happen? Or replaced these? I'm afraid that the wholes are probably egged out. I can push them and it appears to tighten them. I'm figuring I can't get that lucky. Any help would be awsome.

I just re-fixed mine on my 48 B. Not sure it is
the best way, but it made a big difference and got
rid of the death wobble on the front wheels when
in road gear on the road.

What I did was take the old riveted on out and
pretty much replaced it with a 1/2" hardened bolt.
I used like a five inch long bolt because I didn't
want the threaded part of the bolt contacting the
where the pin was. Then I beveled the hex end of
the bolt to fit into the old hole, and on the
other end I took two nuts, TIG welded them
together (fusion weld, no filler) and then tapered
that and bolted it on. Does that make sense?

Yea, I think so. I was hoping they were some sort of tapered rivet. but if you stuck a Bolt in it then that shoots down that Idea.

What did it take to remove the original rivets? I'm guessing a torch? Did you notice any egging of the holes? I'm just trying to see what i might be in for.

It was 8 years ago when I did it the first time, but
I seem to recall I drilled the head off the rivet. I
was fortunate, and the metal was not worn in the
castings, just the riveted bolt. I've learned a few
things since I first started this tractor, but making
"tapered" nuts seems to be a good compromise to
heating it up and making a real rivet. (since mine is
painted now) Shoot me an email if I can help more.
