What's it worth

I never thought I'd ask a 'what's it worth' question but here goes! A friend called me asking what his 51 B is worth. I did the restoration on it about five years ago and I haven't seen it since then, but I do know it's been run on a sickle mower a few times and it's been driven 25 miles and back to a threshing show, so the bugs are probably out of it. I don't think it's been used much if any in the past few years. Maybe started up but not much more than that.

The 'restoration', subject to interpretation, included bored block with new .45 pistons and a thoroughly reworked head. Carb is rebuilt by a rebuilder but it wasn't Roberts. Paint is acrylic urethane with clear coat, tires are new all around and the seat cushion is new and it's the proper one with the springs inside. All lights worked when it left my shop. If I remember right I rewired it with cloth covered wire like original. The electrical is 6V and, yes, it's positive ground. I can't remember if it's mag or distributor. He's looking at selling.

It's in northwest Iowa. Thanks, Jim

as recent posts of auction results have shown, there is a huge swing depending on location.
In NY, a late model B with a properly went thru engine, nice paint/tin and new tires is a $3k machine minimum.
A tough seller that is willing to wait on the right buyer...considerably more is possible.

Common B's just aren't hot, haven't been hot for quite a while, and are unlikely to become hot. I'd guess $1400-2200 (unless you find the mythical "Right Buyer" everyone talks about, but is seldom sighted). I like B's and have an early styled myself, but they're just too common. I own mine because it was inexpensive.

But, hey, start high. You can always go down, but you're unlikely to be able to go up. Get excellent pictures from all angles, post it on CL and here with a very detailed and inspiring backstory, and ask $3500 for a couple weeks. If it doesn't sell and you're getting no calls, list it for $3250 for a couple weeks. And so on.

RockyRidge, I think you are definitely in the ballpark. Actually, it will have to bring $1,000 before it can bring $1,400. There are just too many John Deere Bs out there yet.
