Sam, I just built a 1948 A that is almost 700 cubes and 10.5:1 compression. It has the same starter you would have. Make sure your compression releases are venting, the starter is good, a good 1000CCA battery and large wires to the starter. You need to be able to idle it way down to start it.

Good luck.

I agree with jdb puller. Your starter will do the job if its in good shape. Get the highest cranking amp battery you can find & use the heaviest cables. I just went thru this. Also, replace your petcocks with quarter inch ball valves.

Please don't yell. Do you see anybody else typing in all capitals?
As previously stated. A quality, not a cheapo group 31 battery and real 2/00 battery cables. Bolt the chassis return to the engine casting, not to the battery box. Not cables from Walmart or with aftermarket bolted on ends.
Goes ditto for the compression release too.

ran new 00 wire for the ground last nite replacing the 4 guage cable tractor started so much easier than ever thanks for the solution....
