70 gas throttle lever

ive got my grandfathers gas 70 and it runs fine but i cant seem to get the throttle to allow a nice idle and still reach fast idle rpms.

when i measure the movement of the lever at the top end where the little ball is it has 4 inches of movement. does that sound corect? my 70diesel moves about 12 inches.

any help is appreciated

I have a gas 70. I would say (without measuring) that the distance of movement at the top of the throttle arm from off-wide open is about 8 inches.
The problem I have is that the throttle will not stay in one place, vibrations and such, the throttle slowly moves to idle. Very annoying when roading it, and not good at all when plowing/baling etc.
Replaced the throttle disc and got a bit better.

By all means remove the throttle handle &
friction disc from the cowl. a 5/8 wrench
& a couple 1/2" wrench's will do wonders.
Clean inspect & replace friction disc if
needed. If you have limited movement of the
throttle handle the slotted holes are partially
filled with crap from years of use. They rust in
there so use caution not to twist off bolts.

If the discs are good and all is freed up there is to be a spring that you tighten the nut on to tighten them up.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Reviewed the I&T Service Manual No. JD-10 SLOW IDLE ADJUSTMENT paragraph 84 on page 29.

"[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]Move the speed control hand lever (Key 7) all the way to the rear and turn the throttle stop screw to obtain a slow idle speed of 600 rpm when checked at the belt pulley dust cover. Adjust the length of the speed control rod (Key 15) at the ball joint (Key 17) until the governor spring (Key 29) touches the stop on the governor arm (Key 33A).[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]"

Take a look at the photos below of the setting on "15" one of our 1953 Model 70s.

The "travel" distance of the speed control lever on both tractors is about 4-6 inches.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes the (GASP) OEM asbestos friction disks disintegrate and double up in the slots, as well.

Yes, take a look at the photo below of the cap screw (Key 20) against the dash of "1011".

Or maybe the halves are stuck and won't move ?
Some of that stuff can get pretty grunged up and rusted.
