John Deere B lead washers

I'm working on restoring my 1939 John Deere B and I need to replace the head gasket. When I disassembled it the lead washers was between the nut and the head. I was told by someone that was wrong. That they should be between the head and gasket. Before I go screwing things up, could some of you experienced 2 cylinder guys help me out? Which way is right?
Thanks for your input and advice!!!

Yup, under the nuts. Have fun with your 39, some times you end up spending more time looking for parts then working on them. 39 and 40 are funny that way, funny funny, not funny ha ha.

You may find that finding replacement lead washers tough. Most Gasket kits only come with brass ones. There has been quite a discussion in the past on the purpose of the washer. Either as a seal or as a way to get the proper torque rather then steel on steel.

I used a felpro set that was supposed to still have those lead washers but when i got it it didn't have them. The Brass one's I used have worked just fine.

There is a company that I know of but have never used that can make you lead washers. Sharp & Nuclead Corporate Man. Nuclead (508)583-2699. Sharp (508) 583-4080. 415 North Elm St. West Bridgewater, MA. 02379 If you go into their web site they make a lot of differant items out of lead and will make custom washers for you..

I forgot to add that if you can find sheet lead you can make a cutter for outside diameter and one for the size hole you need.

The lead washers are not tough to find.

Part # is B369R, at about a buck-twenty.

Even the mega-dealer I deal with that doesn't know you unless you are buying a quarter-million dollar machine has 13 ON HAND!
