4440 charging

The gauge is maxed out on charge. It has always read a bit on the high side in the yellow, but yesterday it was maxed out on the high side of charging. I don't know if the gauge is bad or what? What should I check? Thanks for any thoughts.

Put a volt meter on the batteries while running to check he actual charging voltage. You may need to do each battery separately depending on how they are hooked together. Series or parellel. Should be around 14.4 volts or so. If your meter is way off the gauge read out, may be a bad gauge.

FIRST, wiggle/check/clean the two-wire connector that plugs into the alternator. If there is a poor connection there (COMMON) they will overcharge.

If that doesn't return the gauge reading to normal, verify the charging voltage at the battery terminal that is goes to the starter solenoid.

If you see more than about 14.5 Volts there, the alternator's internal regulator has failed, or there is a problem with the "voltage sense" wire leading to the alternator's #2 terminal. MAY be marked "IG" if a Denso alt.)

First if batteries are in parallel, disconnect and load test each one. A shorted dead battery will cause over charging and other problems.....Ron
