4320 Steering Motor Problem for Tim S

We have a 4320 that we switched to tricycle for the summer for cultivating. Unfortunately we didn't know that it needed a shorter bolt at the time and ended up damaging the steering spindle seal. It didn't start leaking till we put the wide front back on. To repair it, we pulled the front end back off and just unbolted the spindle retainer plate and pulled the spindle gear out the bottom with the steering motor still in tractor. Upon re-installation, I followed the service manual instruction that the arrow on spindle had to be lined up with one of the marks on the retainer. The wheels were straight when we took it apart. Now that I have the front axle back on, the plate will not bolt up right to the steering spindle. In hindsight, I realize I should have marked where it was before disassembly. What do I do now to get everything lined back up right? I know I'm gonna have to pull the retainer plate back off but what position should the spindle be in? Do I need to first count the turns of the steering wheel and get it centered up too? Please help, thanks.

When you dropped the pinion down out most likely static oil pressure allowed the rack pistons to move one way or the other. If the steer lines were removed first that may have let the rack pistons stay in place. Now since it's "out Of wack" remove the lines push one piston to the left and one to the right set the timing marks appropriately and set the pinion back in,,then cycle the pinion to be sure the timing marks line up.
