1219 sickle pin adjustment

I broke the sickle head on my 1219.
Got a new head, and bolted it on, non clog guards, with bolted sections.
Just installed new under serrated sections.

Question is....
in operators manual says to just install pin and tighten.

in technical manual says to install pin, move knife to inward stroke and measure gap between top of knife head and pitman. If a 0-1/8 gap then make sure pin is sticking up 1/2 from top of pitman.

why is there 2 different procedures? Guessing they want the head to be able to float, and not bottom out if pin is to low?
Do want to break another head.

I think it broke before, because i removed sickle and just installed and didnt check measurements

Jack, I never checked anything...how hard was it getting the sickle back in? Have to pound or anything? I've replaced heads before-just put on, slid whole assembly in and took off.

It caught on 2 guards, other wise slide in good. Then adjusted the gaps with feeler gauge. Some are tight on left loose on right on same guard. Not sure if there is an "adjustment" for that?

I don't think there really is. Not much you really can do. Those are getting to be old machines and no doubt it has hit a few things in that area. I had a 1209(older yet, but same machine)added the non-clog guards, and yeah, I probably broke a head or 2 in 20 years, but never found anything to adjust. If its binding on a guard, try bending/prying it somehow.
