Re: JD rope knob

Try John Deere parts catalogue P.C. 402 page 2 and page 46. Most of the operators manuals will show this also.
 
I think you are right on this, except I don't see
how the knob would take the slack out of the
rope. The knob just provides a place to grab, it
has no slot or opening in the center to allow
'gathering' some slack. I looked in some sales
brochures for #55 plows and it is shown as you
say on a second rope from the leveling lever to
the hitch release lever. Interestingly it is
shown in several operators manuals for early
plows in the parts picture but not mentioned in
the parts list, nor shown with the plow picture.
 
The rope goes in one end, out thru the center of the knob, back in the center, then out the other side. This creates a loop that can take the slack out of the extra rope when the lever is moved.
 
I have an NOS John Deere knob, I had forgotten about the opening for the loop, I just looked at it and you are right. First time I have ever forgotten anything! LOL.
