has anyone put valve seals on 420w? if so what and
how, mine puffs blue smoke every time it is
started but not when running Thanks

When I worked at a JD shop we used to put seals on some engines, think it was the 4020 by using a cutter to cut off the outide of the valve guide so a PC (perfect circle) automotive type seal would fit. We also used to Knurl the guides but then found that doing both seals and knurling was too much and valves didn't get any lubrication. I suspect you could get one of the valve guide cutters, I think they use them on older car engines and put cap type seals on. My 430 has puffed smoke when I start it for years, doesn't use a quart of oil in 200 hours, and runs great. Hard to justify the expense and trouble of putting seals on.

Deere did only they called them oil deflectors. Any shop that does head work will have umbrella seals for the intake valves. You'll need a valve spring compressor to change them.
