Auction coming up. Several JDs, but this is the best looking one of the bunch. Most are pretty rough. Anything special to look for on a 50? Thanks.

That tractor "looks" like it's been treated well. Good looking tires. Tachometer. New seat cushions. Sheet metal in good shape. Looks like it's seen some belt use. No power steering or three point. Good luck!!

John,
Apologies for hijacking your post but,
I'd also like to see a discussion of those things to check when evaluating a tractor for purchase. I'm a relative 2 cyl newbie and I know these 50-80 year old machines can hide looming problems pretty well.
What to look for when initially looking... the first 10 minutes of eyes on: besides the obvious tires, tin, frame welds... what about brakes, lube, carb, mag, tranny, fan, fuel tanks. What should one look for without a wrench.
Has this topic already been beaten to death?

About the BEST way to evaluate one is to "Run it", WORK it Hard in every Gear, then LOOK at ALL the Lube areas and see if the appropriate oil stayed in each area..
These are VERY reliable tractors and are meant to "WORK", not Parade all the time, so expect a fouled sparkplug once in a while..
Tires are expensive these days and are worth paying more if it has GOOD ones on it, etc.
Brakes are about the least of your worries..!!
A GOOD Clutch (AND Clutch-Driver) and Flywheel ARE important..
Does it Stay in gear under Heavy Load..??
If it is "short on Power", be suspicious..

Get there Early and talk to the Owner and Drive it if you can..

Ron.

The batteries on all of the tractors are shot. I think they were all pulled to their positions. The 50 has new tires, which is a fairly high dollar item anymore. Don't know that the owner is around anymore as it is an estate sale. Looks like he had a lot of ideas about restoring some tractors, but never got around to doing much of it. It will be interesting to see how they sell.
