JD "M" Starting problem, Carb ID.

I have several problems I am hoping for some answers and or directions. #1 carb id where do I find the #s it is a Marvel Schriber ? looking for ? tsx #s? my carb is leaking fuel out the packing at the choke shaft. #2 Tractor was overhauled some years ago, used very little then stored inside with a drained fuel tank, now pulled out and is flooding the new spark plugs #216. I have power coming into dist. body, points opening and closing, cap & rotor contacts clean. it appears to not have spark at plugs. All was running fine when stored in clean dry shed. I appreciate any help, Thanks Gerald.[/b]

Reviewed the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/John-Deere-Tractor-Data-Book/dp/0760302286">JOHN DEERE TRACTOR DATA BOOK</a> on page 83.

It lists Marvel-Schebler TSX-245 for the gasoline tractor.

It lists Marvel-Schebler TSX-475 for the all-fuel tractor.

Check to make sure that you have power at the points.

You might consider replacing the condensor.

Hope this helps.

Carb should be a TSX 245. There should be a tag just below the mounting flange that is round and normally brass in color that is riveted to the carb body. Sounds like the float is stuck/sticking in the bowl if it is over-running with fuel. There could also be junk stuck in the float needle holding it open allwoing too much fuel.

216 Autolites should work just fine.

I would suspect that you have a bad condensor if you get nothing at all at the plugs for a spark. I had this happen on my MT.

You claim " I have power coming into dist. body"

If youre talking about the small side terminal on the distributor which wires to the output (NOT ignition) side of the coil, THAT TERMINAL USUALLY HAS NO HOT VOLTAGE (with respect to ground)BECAUSE THE POINTS ARE USUALLY CLOSED WHEN SHES SETTING THERE NOT RUNNING.

A test lamp on the distributors small side terminal (or coils output) should flash ON when points are open but OFF when they are closed, such as if the engine is turned over slowly.

If that terminal is always hot the points aren't closing well or badly burned or pitted or carboned, inspect that first thing and clean or file if necessary to see if the light goes off when points are closed. Other possibility is the wire is bad/open from coil to dist or a bad connection or the distributor or points dont have a good ground. Insure the wire inside the dist from that terminal is wired to the points???

Below is my complete Troubleshooting Procedure for no spark, try it.

You can drag some fine sandpaper or a dollar bill through the points, as they are probably corroded from moisture after a couple of years.
