John Deere 50 Decal Placement

I"m ready to put decals onto a John Deere 50--but wonder if you know where the "50" decal was placed from the factory. I"ve looked through several Green magazines and see decals placed on straight, on a slight tilt and others on a full angle. I"d like to place them on how they came from the factory.

Anybody have a manual they could consult for me? Maybe even show a picture?

The operators manual and service manual that you consulted for the proper specs during the restoration have oodles of factory images . With the decals in the factory speced locations.

It will make a BIG difference as to how old your tractor is.
I have observed some of the early ones with the "window" larger openings in the rear cast wheels have a smaller decal positioned lower and farther forward IIRC ? then the later ones that had a larger decal more centered in that lower panel. All were at a slant.
Jordes or K&K may have some exact specs. for you.

Hey buickanddeere, do you always have to be an a$$? I Get tired of reading your dumb replies, I bet you dont have many friends?

Mike is right. On the very first 50's the decal was smaller and thinner and favored the front of the grille side. I am not sure if the 22 degree measurement is right or not as I know the later 20 series used a steeper angle than that, somewhere around 28 degrees, I believe. As far as looking at Operator's Manuals for decal guidance, that is a mixed bag. Some machines pictured are prototype machines and decal placement sometimes changed materially after the OM's were printed. However, they offer a starting place. Mike

#1 I don't care what you think. #2 I don't want you as a friend. #3 buy the manuals. They are a wealth of info.

I agree they are a wealth of info,
and I have the manuals for all my
equipment, however, did you ever
stop to think that maybe the
original poster is just putting the
decals on for someone, what do you
recommend we use this site for if
people can't ask questions without
you jumping on them to buy a manual,
gets old after a while. ..

Whoa! Yes, I am placing these decals on the tractor for someone else. I wish I had a manual for this model, but I don't and need to place the decals on tomorrow, so therefore, called on friends for quick help via this forum. Thanks for all of the help!

Two cylinder did a little commentary on this within the last few years. It featured a picture of several 60s at a Deere sponsored demonstration... and every one was different! Some a little, some more than a little.

It may be worth your while to track down the issue.

The john deere decal is located 4 inches back from the grill/hood seam

when I did my 60 the decal for the (60) was already at the right angle on the backing, I used the straight edge of the backing that the decal was on and just leveled it on the tractor and it looks good, prolly is 22 degrees or close

I have an original 70 and the "John Deere" decal starts about 2" from the hood/grille seam. When I repainted my pulling 70 I placed them the same way and they look right. Hope this helps. Mike

Google John Deere 50. You will get a bunch of pictures of 50's. Find one or two that have not been repainted. (No paint on axle, lights not Green, ect.) You can tell where the decals go on the original tractor. There are a few restored ones that will help.

Yep those manuals and literature got me into trouble YEARS ago on my late B with square axle housing.
Many many years later saw an original paint one and the decals went farther up on the hood sides then the books showed.

very good info as always.

just like to add that I spent a good part of my life in a factory (not Deere).
Job instruction...put the decal there...finger pointing..try to keep it centered.....ok, start the line...
I'm not a machine, there will be some variance. And at shift change, the guy that steps into my spot might have a completely different 'aiming' point.

Reminds me of a time at a car show when I saw 2 guys arguing almost to fight level about some 'witness mark' on a sub-assembly.
Glanced over and it looked like a containment mark to me.
When we would get a bad part from a supplier that made it into assembly.....after it was found and the bad parts purged from the system... a few weeks of a paint pencil mark at assembly would show downstream that it was built with the good part.
I stayed silent and moved on. They probably would have told me I was wrong anyway, even though there was a very slight chance that it was my hand that applied the original mark......

Car show people get absolutely "Annal" about that kind of stuff...and some tractor people too,, but not near as bad.. I looked at several pictures and books to try and get my 60 decals near right, but there was a variety of different angles. And as careful as I could they turned out a bit different,,Darn it

Color looks different too ?

Mine are like that and all painted with JD brand paint. They changed their shade of green a lot over the years.
