Hot/Cold block 3010

Does anyone have a reference on the Hot/Cold blocks on a 3010 Gas Intake Manifold? I went to the JD Dealership today to look at the Service Manual (I have my own on order.) but could not find any references to these blocks. On further thought my understanding is the operator would switch these depending on his operating circumstances so a reference may appear in an Operators Manual, which I don't have. Does anyone have one and is there a reference in there talking about how to set the Hot/Cold blocks on the intake manifold. If there is a good section on this I will order the OM. Thanks. Paul

JD 3010 operators manual OMR32385 in servivce section shows changing the hot/cold blocks on your manifold.

Hot mode is when you cannot see any passageway in the block (external view looks square). The "tang" is sticking into the manifold, blocking the exhaust flow from the rear 3 cylinders. (4010 is 3...3010 is 2) This forces the hot exhaust gasses down toward/around the intake manifold to heat it. From there, it flows back up and joins with the exhaust flow from the front 3. This heat helps the gasoline vaporize so it can burn easily.

Cold mode is where the tang sticks straight up and you can see the two passageways in the block. The square portion (which was visible when in hot mode) is covering the exhaust/intake manifold openings to prevent exhaust leaks.

I run my 4010 in the hot mode year around. If I was going to do heavy work such as plowing, I would switch it to cold. They are very cold blooded and will spit and sputter for a long time on when on cold.

That information should be in the front of the service manuel in the tractor tune up information.

Thanks. Funny, I am getting the same advice from another source. "As a all-around tractor just run it on the hot mode." It was in the cold mode on my 3010. I was also advised to "run D21 Champion plugs rather than the D16 (plowing plugs)". No wonder my plugs were all black. Your experience is confirming what I am being told from another source. Thanks again. Paul
